LAST ROTARY MEETING: 5/11/09 55%
Rotarians 87 Active Specials 11 Guests 22 Visiting Rotarians 3 = 124
Minutes by Peter Henninger:
President Barry called the meeting to order at 12:15 P.M. at the Hilton. Jeff Boswell said the invocation and then Jean Beatty led the club and guests in the singing of America (My Country ‘tis of Thee). After the pledge of allegiance and meet and greet Jeanette Archer-Simmons provided the Rotary Minute, an update on the educational aspects of the Rotary Foundation.
Michael Haines then introduced several visiting Rotarians and guests of club members. Bruce Warshawsky, former member of our club and current President of the Susquehanna Township Rotary Club, a small (23 current members) but growing club in our district made a presentation to our club asking for our assistance in helping his club meet their goal of sending three roomfuls of equipment, supplies and furnishings to schools in Kenya. In furtherance of their project their club is hosting a fundraiser and raffle at the Susquehanna Municipal building and is selling raffle tickets for $20 which he offered to our club members, many of which obliged.
YCDT Chair Una Martone then introduced Luis Cruz, a student at Sci-Tech High who made a presentation of a check for $6000 to Kirk Hallett of the Joshua Group, a higher education charity which has an emphasis in reducing the drop out rate of high School students.
John Sutliff then introduced our students of the quarter and teachers of the quarter from John Harris, Alayja Gamble and Mr. Darnell Weathers, from Sci-Tech, Ashley Benner and Mr. Nathan Shirk, and from William Penn, Brianna Mack and Ms. Angela Key.
President-elect Carolyn Dumaresq introduced our new members and sponsors: Nichole Baer and her sponsor Betty Hungerford, Mike Benkovic and his sponsor Andy Rebuck and our newest Corporate sponsor, Capital Blue Cross (Mark Brown and Jewell Laughman). Please make them all welcome.
President Barry reminded the club that this Saturday is another Habitat for Humanity workday and workers are still needed. Please contact Linda or Fred Hartman for details.
Jewel Cooper, filling in for Bob Hostetter then introduced our program. Dan Shuckers, former Prothonotary of the Commonwealth Court and currently an adjunct Professor of Law at the Widener University School of Law here in Harrisburg who gave a very interesting presentation reviewing the book “The Tyranny of Dead Ideas and relating the concepts therein to the erosion of the separation of powers guaranteed in our Constitution. He espoused that the increase of Administrative agencies over the past 70 years or so and their powers to legislate, govern and act as tribunals has eroded the separation of powers envisioned by the framers of the constitution. The idea of limited government has been replaced by not only reliance on government intervention and control of our lives but has been approved in practice by the vast majority of our citizens and even expected by us. The theory of limited government has been replaced by a non-theory, the expansion of government condoned by both parties of our two party system as a result of the rising expectations of the citizenry that government is responsible to take care of us.
Very interesting food for thought. The meeting adjourned at 1:20. Join us next week at at 333 Market Street (please RSVP to Linda ASAP) when we will here from Dr. Kathleen Howley on “Confessions of a Spy”.
