NEWS AND NOTES:
• ROSTER ADVERTISERS!!!
Most Rotarians use their roster frequently and share it with others occasionally. By putting your company name on the roster it will serve two purposes, identify your company as a leader in the area and help us defray the costs of producing the roster. Fellow Rotarians, it’s time to step up and help your club again. Of course these spots will be going quickly, so whoever is first to contact Linda with your reservation and preferred position will get their choice.

Minutes by: Mark Stone
President John opened our weekly meeting with the gong of the bell at 12:19 P.M.  Caryn Carr led us in prayer and Marion Alexander led us in "America the Beautiful." After the pledge of allegiance to our flag, we greeted each other.

A number of guests of club members were introduced.

Rotary Minute:  President John talked about the wonderful work that our Rotary International Foundation does with our per capita contribution of $100.00. The International Foundation has six important areas that the money is used for. Please consider, if you haven't already, making your annual $100 contribution to the Rotary International Foundation.

Committee Reports:
Group Study Exchange- David Morrison tells us that five individuals from Rotary District 3310 (Southeast Asia) will be in Central Pennsylvania for six weeks later this spring. The GSE team will be with us at our regular club meeting on Monday May 2nd.

Habitat for Humanity- Fred Hartman reminded us of the upcoming work day scheduled for Saturday, May 14th at a property in uptown Harrisburg.  Volunteers are needed to work either a full day (8AM to 4PM) or from Noon to 4PM.  Please see Linda to sign up for this important effort in assisting Habitat for Humanity.

Centennial Committee- President John reminded all of the dedication event scheduled for Monday May 16th in Riverfront Park (near Sunken Gardens).  There will be no meeting at the Hilton that day.  RSVP's are requested to Linda for food preparation and head count purposes.  The Harrisburg Rotary Foundation will accept contributions in the amount of $250 per tree from club members. This gift will allow the donor the opportunity to dedicate a tree in the name of a family member or loved one. The gift is tax deductible.

Club Roster-   President John reminded us that the club roster booklet is being prepared for the upcoming Rotary year in July. The club is soliciting company advertisements for the booklet's jacket cover(s). This is a great tool to advertise your organizations name to the club's membership.  Please see Linda if you would like to reserve space within the new roster.

Teacher Impact Award Dinner-  Annually our Rotary District is a sponsor of this event which recognizes outstanding teachers within the region. The event is Monday, May 16th. The club is looking for two individuals who would be interested in attending this evening event. Please see Linda if you are interested in attending on behalf of our club.

Good News Reporting-Jeff Boswell.  Some good news to report today from the membership.  Rotarians Hurwitz, Capita, Hungerford, Saline, Hickey and others had good news to share with the club.

Program: John Fea, Ph.D., Associate Professor of American History and Chair of the History Department at Messiah College. Dr. Fea is the author of "Was America founded as a Christian Nation: A Historical Introduction" which was released earlier this year.  He suggested that the title of the book stirs up questions and debate on both sides of the ideological spectrum.  He went on to suggest that the subject of his book is a politicized topic in the "era" of the culture wars.  He shared with us some key points of reference that the original founding fathers believed.

* The people of the United States in the 19th and 20th century understood themselves to be part of a Christian nation
* The Bible was very important to the founding fathers and ordinary people.  The bible was used in a variety of ways to interpret certain events that occurred in the world.
* The founding fathers believed in the doctrine of providence, which says that God is active and intervenes on a daily basis within his world versus the doctrine of deism, which says that God created the universe and then abandoned it without any further intervention.
* All founding fathers believed in freedom of religion and saw to it that individuals could worship God as they saw fit.
* The founding fathers saw religion as important in creating good and "virtuous" citizens. They promoted religion to help make the best people for the republic.

He countered these thoughts from his book with the fact that the United States Constitution is essentially a "god-less" document making no mention of Christianity.
A very interesting presentation from a local historian.  A lively question and answer session followed Dr. Fea's remarks. Copies of his book were available for purchase ($15) at the conclusion of the meeting.

Our next club meeting will be on Monday, May 2nd at the Hilton. The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 P.M.
