Most Rotarians use their roster frequently and share it with others occasionally. By putting your company name on the roster it will serve two purposes, identify your company as a leader in the area and help us defray the costs of producing the roster. Fellow Rotarians, it’s time to step up and help your club again. Of course these spots will be going quickly, so whoever is first to contact Linda with your reservation and preferred position will get their choice.

The ROTARY INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION makes miracles happen around the world all year long, but your donation now will help us reach our goal even sooner. Send your check to the Rotary office. THANK YOU for your support.

Minutes by Karen Paris
President Garry called the meeting to order at 12:14 and Caryn Carr led singing of "America" followed by Howard Ammons who gave a moving invocation. During the member-to-member welcome, you’d think we’d not seen each other for a month because the greetings and handshakes were profuse.

Karen Snider introduced several members of the YCDT team who announced that this year’s grants were being targeted toward teens who had children. $6000 was given to two different programs which provide services to this population. The first program is geared to supporting the teen to allow him/her to remain in school. The second has a goal of providing medical coverage for these families. Garry thanked Karen Snider for her leadership and also the YCDT program for their diligence and efforts.

We have 4(FOUR !!!) new members. Bruce Grossman (aka the spouse of Janet Edwards) is a transactional attorney. Bruce, the common definition of TA is: a psychoanalytic theory of psychology developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne during the late 1950's. Berne postulated that there are three "ego states" - the Parent, Adult, and Child states, largely shaped through childhood experiences. (courtesy of Wikepedia). SOOOO, the question is, which State are you in, Bruce? (We only want to know because if it’s the child state, we’ll put you on the Chef’s Committee for the Pancake Breakfast. They love to make a mess). Our next new member, Jason Hicks, already received a "grilling" during his introduction. We now know that he is, indeed, married , loves reading and exercising, and is a grad of Cedar Cliff and Ship. Jason, that’ll teach you to come to a Rotary meeting without your proposer. The third member is John Logan, who is a transfer from BURRRadford (as in up north and cold) County, PA. He’s a past Rotary President and enjoys golf, skiing, motorcycling, etc. He survived sitting next to yours truly, so I think he’s in for the long haul. And, last, but of course, not least, is Amy Sauertieg, who is the Director of Development at the Jewish Family Service of Greater Harrisburg. Amy attended Boston University. Following Amy’s introduction, there was a round of applause.

Next we were treated to a rare group of "speakers" - the Best and the Brightest, a contest sponsored by the Hersha Group and who are selected by the Patriot-News and its judges. Our own Hasu Shah introduced the program, noting that in 2003 he was invited to be a judge in it. He and his wife felt that helping students hone their skills is a worthwhile endeavor and his corporation now underwrites it. Several Rotarians were asked to be the judges this year.

169 applications were received for the 20 awards. They will be featured on May 27, 2007 in the Patriot-News. All who applied had exemplary scholastic achievement and community involvement and some had overcome adversity as well. The applicants were asked questions and responded in groups of 4 - 5 to each of several audience questions.

1) How do you balance all of the aspects of your busy life? (Answers ranged from allocating specific time to each, combining activities, prioritizing, and making sure that you’re passionate about what you do).

2) Who inspired you and how? (Answers were - so many people, my sister, my mom, my teacher)

3) Events that have impacted you? (Answers - the death of Lisa Waller inspired me to go to Medical School to become a physician; my two cousins with disabilities have helped me decide what my career path should be; having spent time learning about my family who lived in Carlisle, I decided to go to Dickinson)

4) What challenges have you faced? ( Answers - the size of CV high school ; making sure our family has time together; being as good as my older brother.)

5) How do you feel about the future of our country? (Answers - It’s bright; with global warming and other things, our generation needs to and can change things; people see us as a generation that is going downhill morally and we need to show people that that is not true.)

6) Who is your favorite book/author/movie, etc.? (Answers - "Gone with the Wind", "The Aeneid", Tom Clancy, Harry Potter)

7) Do you see yourself coming back to Central PA after graduation or moving away? (Answers by all - "I’ll travel and then come back here because of family." "I don’t necessarily see myself in the midstate but someplace similar". " I’m not sure about coming back but I enjoyed growing up here".

"I have no idea". "I may move back here due to family ties unless something changes". "I’m going 1000 miles away to school and then into the Peace Corps". "I’d like to explore the world - maybe later in life I’ll be back because this area made me who I am." "I’m not sure - NYC is the fashion capital of the world. Or, I may go to Europe." "I grew up in Chicago so the big city appeals to me. I may join Medicins San Borders. "My dream is to go to NYC as a journalist." "I see so many problems, pollution, buildup, the State needs some changes. I’m going out to greener pastures."

Garry noted that the future is indeed bright and wished all the students well. He advised them that wherever they go, they should join a Rotary Club to help make the world a better place.
