PROGRAM: As the 18th century was ending, the French had colonized the western third of Hispanola, known as Haiti, with many lucrative enterprises including the export of vast quantities of sugar cane and mahogany. The French colonial masters had magnificent lives of luxury on massive plantations.  Vast sums of money changed hands in the northern city of Cap Haitian where large numbers of ships were coming and going daily.  They carried luxury items to Haiti and Haitian products in great demand to Europe.  These ships also transported performers of all types for theatrical performances.  By 1795, Cap Haitian was called The Paris of the New World with more money, shipping, culture, and other amenities than all 13 colonies.
Slave labor supported this grandiose life style.  The indigenous Arawack Indians disappeared due to death and disease brought form Europe.  They were quickly replaced with slaves brought from West Africa on the same ships that served the United States.  The overbearing French colonial plantation owners were outnumbered eight or nine to one by the slave workers who, eventually, could stand it no longer and revolted.  French masters were killed in large numbers and their homes burned.  Haiti declared itself and independent nation in 1804.
Despite only an additional 30 years of independence, our country is the most powerful nation in the world but Haiti has absolutely nothing in the way of money or power.  The earthquake of January 12, 2010, magnified all of this and brought the physical and material aspects into TV sets around the world.  Other qualities of these people stand in stark contrast to these traditional measures of success and failure.  Dr. Judson will discuss not only the devastation caused by the earthquake, but also the less material aspects of the Haitian culture and how they allowed this nation to survive.

NEWS AND NOTES:
•  ROSTER INFORMATION SHEETS: Please return with any updated information and your committee selections for 2010-11.

The Fellowship Committee invites all members and their guests to attend our “Nine and Dine” events in 2010.  Once a month, at a different venue each month, we will play nine holes of golf and have a chance to grab a bite to eat and a cold drink.  In order to plan ahead and accommodate attendance every month we ask that you sign up either for the golf and dine package or either golf only or dine only.  In other words there will be a sign up sheet each month.  (You certainly can play golf with a preplanned group or ask to be grouped by the host of each event.)  This is not a fundraiser for the club-it is a fellowship event-but you will need to budget to pay the announced fees for the golf and food.  You will also receive a make up for attendance!  Our second Nine & Dine event is Tuesday May 25th at Blue Ridge CC.  The package to play and ride a cart is $25. Additionally it is “Italian Pasta” buffet night at the club so all players and dine-only attendees can budget $10 for a wonderful dinner!  We can set up as many tee times as we need between 3:50 and 4:50 that day.  Please sign up today or as soon as you can as we will need to confirm our playing needs with the course in the next few weeks.

Bob Saline presented the Strategic Plan to the membership which included the following goals:

2009-2010 Strategic Plan - Club Goals
STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE: Robert S. Saline, Chair

Goal Summary

  1. Increasing Service Participation and Opportunities – Leader: John Judson

Awareness of the opportunities to serve and the progress being made with club initiatives will enhance participation.  Tracking of club participation and opportunities for service needs to be done on a regular, perhaps weekly, basis. Increasing participation in our club’s activities and opportunities to do so will be beneficial in terms of service as well as membership.

  1. Enhancing and Expanding Membership – Leader: Una Martone

To enhance the membership experience for current Rotarians and expand the number of Rotarians in the Rotary Club of Harrisburg in order to yield top quality services and programs for the community.  Use two strategies to achieve this goal:

  1. ENHANCE the membership experience for the purpose of creating a “point of conversion” through which members become truly dedicated Rotarians and recognizing the fact that each person will respond to different strategies and programs to reach the “point of conversion.”
  2. EXPAND/increase the number of members in the Rotary Club of Harrisburg.
  1. Defining Who We Are and Who We Want to be as a Club – Leader:  Bob Saline

To define the brand of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg as a means to project the benefits of the brand promise to our internal (current and future members of the Club) and external stakeholders of the Club.
