Meets Noon Mondays at the Hilton |

Speaker: Jeff Piccola – PA State Senator Topic: "SAVING THE HARRISBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT: Two Points of View" The next two meetings (May 3 and may 10) are designed in tandem, both are entitled "SAVING THE HARRISBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT: Two Points of View" Both speakers have radically different ideas regarding the authority, control and management over the district! As the Harrisburg School District is our Club’s major commitment of service, it is imperative that we understand what these controlling issues are! I encourage all of you to attend both meetings. Minutes by Andy Rebuck: Three questions for you this fine day:
Answers below so keep reading. “Play Ball” or something like that resounded through the Rotary meeting room at 333 Market Street by our umpire and crew chief Caroline at exactly 12:14 despite the steady drizzle gracing the city. This scribe had pen in hand and was thinking it sure was nice we have an indoor game today so we aren’t rained out (see question 1 above.) (Yes, the play was delayed for at least five minutes as the ground crew scrambled to bring in more “plates” so all the players and fans could actually eat before the game!) Rotarians Everhart and Arnoldi handled pre-game ceremonies and Beth “Power Pitcher” Peiffer threw out the first pitch in noting that while we had no visitors or guests today we did have a nice crowd on hand and some dignitaries like Birthday Boys Frese and Hartman! Having been “traded” to our club from Canidagua, NY Rotary Club, Mark “Lefty” Lewis highlighted his career as a superintendent and as an educator while also hitting a home run with a note about his two sons and five grandkids. Way to go Lefty! The hits kept flying off our bats as good news cheering allowed Rebuck, Paige, M. Lane, J. Bedard, Siegel and Dumaresq to score with news of children, grandchildren, weddings, new jobs and successful puppies! Speaking of great lumber and hitting home runs, our club will be part of a press conference by the Mayor Friday April 30th, announcing our 100th anniversary and the project to plant 100 trees commemorating this milestone! This writer thought he heard loud and clear “Hot dog, get your hot dog” as none other than Bob-you guessed it “Hot Dog” Hostetter strolled to the plate with that confident-I can hit a home run just watch-look on his face. “HD” as we like to call Bob took some nice swings in introducing today’s guest speaker with his tongue in cheek story about opening day at the Senator’s new stadium. If you missed this opening, make sure to ask “HD” for his notes. The seventh inning stretch closed and the final exciting innings were in front of us so the fans all leaned forward in their seats to hear David Kloser talk with wit and energy about his favorite topic of baseball and specifically how the mental aspects of sports play such a huge part in a player’s success. David wove his story around his playing days and how pressure to be perfect and facing adversity impacted his pitching success. Our speaker won the game with a bases loaded “tater’ that flew out in dead center field with his explanation of the acronym “B.A.S.E.” David explained that this stands for belief, action plan, staying in the moment and emotions controlled. As the fans exited the stadium at exactly 1:01 PM celebrating another team victory this writer most assuredly heard more than one fan commenting that indeed the Phillies will win the World Series this year! Go Phillies and go Rotary…. |
