Minutes by ANDY REBUCK:
Rain, rain, go away; come back some other day! Perhaps that was the sentiment as our club gathered to meet with a dousing of rainfall filling our streets with puddles. You would not have known it though as a strong contingent joined for lunch today. By the time all the umbrellas were lowered and the raincoats were hung out to dry, we had jumped right into our meeting kick off routine.
Rotarian Bill “Bank On Me” Spahr led the awarding of student and teacher of the month certificates to representatives of our three local schools. Congratulations were certainly in order for this fine group!
Next Rotarian “Jeff “Big Bucks” Boswell ran around the room to allow our members a chance to shout out good news reporting. There was a lot of good news! (Speaking of running, make sure you congratulate Christopher Markley on his Boston Marathon finish!)
President Carrie asked if members interested in brainstorming a service project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of our club might contact John Judson. This milestone is still several years away, but now is the time to start the process.
Bob “Frog-like voice today” Hostetter (if you missed, you just have to ask him) then introduced today’s featured speaker.
For the next thirty minutes we enjoyed a refreshing, informative and unique presentation by Dutch Wurzbach who detailed his observation of life as a lobbyist in our state capitol.
This scribe found it interesting how our speaker had handed slips of paper to eleven Rotarians who in turn read their slip at the appropriate time in the presentation.
For example, the first slip was a quote by Benjamin Franklin that led to a discussion about the more than 5000 bills that are introduced every year on the hill. The second slip of paper stated that “Democracy is not a spectator sport.”
As the presentation continued to give our audience an interesting glimpse into the life of a lobbyist and the process of this work in a freewheeling fashion, the Rotarians continued to jump up and read their respective slips of paper.
Dutch was witty and forthright throughout his presentation. He finished by sincerely saying that his job is to make sure a politician does not make a bad vote. Our club headed to the exit at 1:15 exactly fully believing that he lives up to this expectation every day.
Stay dry….until next week!
