Last Saturday, our mission team to Haiti left at 1:30 AM for a ride to Dulles International.  They arrived safely in Haiti, cleared customs, were met by our hosts, and traveled two hours in the back of a stake-sided truck to Pierre Payen where they retired early that evening.
On Sunday, the 24 suitcases of medicines and supplies were unpacked, organized. The operating room was cleaned and sanitized. By the end of the day three surgeries were completed. The first was a man who had a mangled leg that they had to break, reset, inserting pins and plates.  The second was a women, who continued to bleed five weeks after giving birth. The third was a young woman with a ruptured appendix.   All were recovering well Sunday evening. Today, 12 surgeries are planned for a 16 hour period.
Several of the team are assisting in setting up a cholera clinic across the road from the hospital in a building normally used for pre-natal care and outpatient visits. Hundreds of people with signs of the disease are gathering outside the hospital. Providing antibiotics and rehydration kits will be the normal protocol for the foreseeable future.
Tom Willilams, who accompanied his wife Tiz, who is a nurse, has been assigned a team of six local Hatians to clear a clogged sewer line, tearing down and rebuilding a diesel motor for a generator, and several other construction projects at the hospital.
Locals have been hired to serve as interpretors, one for each of our volunteers. Dr. Judson, a team member, said that they are very good with English translations, a real asset in getting things done, and helpful in communicating with patients.
Temperatures are in the mid 90's with rain predicted every day. The heat index hovers around 114!  Yet, all are in good spirits and in good health. Please keep this team as well as the team we have in Honduras this week in your prayers. Also, keep those who are suffering in Haiti and Honduras in your prayers.

Minutes by Jacqueline Jackson-DeGarcia:
It is that time of year – Election time.  We cannot turn on the television or the radio or open a paper without an advertisement, commentary or article speaking to one of the state or federal positions up for grabs.  About a month ago, we joined with the Press Club to hear from Gubernatorial Democratic candidate Dan Onorato.  Today, we heard from his opposition, Republican  Tom Corbett.
Before the doors open to reveal the Press Club and Attorney General Corbett, the meeting was opened by President-Elect Bob Saline (filling in for Dr. Judson who is in Haiti providing his medical expertise on a selfless mission of aid.  Thank you Dr. Judson for your dedication!).  John Cavanaugh provided the invocation and John Hickey led us in song.  We had many guests in attendance today seizing the opportunity to hear from Attorney General Corbett.
It is the last Monday before the Pancake Breakfast.  Once again, Peggy Grove tirelessly sought donations, helpers and offered thanks to all those who have demonstrated their support.  Also, Peggy celebrates two birthdays this week – her actual birth day and her “rebirth” day as a breast cancer survivor.  Congratulations Peggy!!!!!
The doors then opened to reveal a packed room and Attorney General Corbett at the podium.  As the Commonwealth’s Attorney General, Corbett’s name was much more familiar to many than was that of Onorato.  Fortunately, that has changed and we had the opportunity to hear both candidates distinguish their record and positions in person rather than through advertisements.  Tom summarized his record as Attorney General and then turned to answering questions on issues ranging from taxation of natural gas drilling (which he opposes), fiscal discipline and limited government.  He also clarified his position on spending for seniors stating that he supports programs that benefit the senior citizens and those with Alzheimers and supports the apportionment of moneys from the lottery fund to those programs.  For more details on his platform and his official policies, see www.tomcorbettforgovernor.com.
