Program- Major Henry A. Heim, United States Air Force

With Veterans day, only two days away, Harrisburg Rotary Club was the recipient of an emotional life story presentation by Major Henry A. Heim (Ret.), United States Air Force. He told us of his poor beginnings in the coal fields of Pennsylvania's coal region, and the fact that his high school class voted him the "least likely to succeed". This was all the motivation he needed when he enlisted in the then Army Air Corp, in July 1940.  He described the carnage and chaos at Hickham Field near Pearl Harbor on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 while stationed in Hawaii.  Subsequently testing for his pilot wings he became one of 85 to graduate from an initial class of 204 members. It was the first class of "Flight Officers"

Having completed training on the new B-17 Flying Fortress, he was soon in combat over North Africa and Italy in World War II.  He served as Squadron Leader, Deputy Group Leader, and Group Lead pilot for the 2nd Bombardment Group, 20th Squadron, flying perilous missions over Italy, Austria, Hungary and Germany. He received a battlefield commission usually reserved for ground officers.  Volunteering for a second tour of duty, he would complete over twenty-five additional missions for a total of over seventy-five missions in the European Theater of Operations.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in October 1944.

During the Korean Conflict, he served as Aircraft Commander, flying B-29's for the 307th Bombardment Wing, 370th Squadron. During this tour, he logged more flight time than any other Aircraft Commander, completing 51 missions. In addition to the DFC, he received two purple hearts, two presidential Unit Citations and the Air Medal with eleven clusters and many more awards and citations.

The soft spoken Major Heim summed up his military experience by saying that he "would do it all over again in a heartbeat". A standing ovation was given to a true patriot and American hero. President Carolyn then asked all veterans in the room to stand and another round of applause was given to these living heroes.

We stood and repeated the Four Way Test.  The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 PM.
