LAST ROTARY MEETING:  11/1/10       65%
Rotarians    83      Active Specials  9          Guests  15          Visiting Rotarians 1    = 108

Minutes by Karen Paris:
Our meeting started at 12:08 PM when President John called us to order noting that he was starting early because we have a “HUGE” agenda to cover.  He suggested we “eat and listen”.   Wil Everhart gave a thoughtful invocation, noting the many things that we can be thankful for.  Then Caryn Carr led us in a verse of “America.”   President John thanked Norma Swain for filling in at the piano, noting she is happy to do so whenever asked.

John’s style sometimes allows us to go back to our “chat rooms” at this point, but today but he again stated that the agenda was “HUGE”, so we went right on to recognizing the students and teachers of the quarter.

President John then noted that, unfortunately, a fire alarm went off at noon on Saturday, interrupting the last few minutes of both the Pancake Breakfast and the Auction.  That means we have an auction item for today.  President John brought Peggy Grove to the podium who expressed her appreciation for everyone’s efforts on Saturday, noting that a lot of auction items had to be transported back to her office as a result of the fire alarm; she thanked the crew who helped to do that.  She introduced the two co-chairs, Jacqueline and Karen, to give a quick summary of Saturday’s breakfast.

Jacqueline noted that the day was great and that there were Rotarians “all over the place”, She said that we had a “huge rush of people at 10 AM”  (John, your word “huge” is getting contagious!).  This resulted in “controlled chaos” (editor’s description of the kitchen and serving lines), constant pancake refills, etc., all with lots of fun in the kitchen as we tried to keep up with the 400++ customers who came in all at one time. Jacqueline thanked UGI for donating a griddle that helped us to keep up with the orders – what a generous donation!   Yours truly then noted that we had 870 people in attendance and that the staff in the kitchen all need to sign up again for next year because there wasn’t one pancake that didn’t meet the standards of the chef.   I also thanked those who came early (as on Friday) and stayed late (as in after the fire dept. let us back in the building to clean up).   Chef-du-jour Rebuck announced that the family who won the iPad has vowed to be supporters of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg forever!  Dr. Knight brought a wonderful video with lots of photos of the breakfast and some great background music (“We are Family”) to share with the group.   She noted that we are family and thanked the Club for its support.

Fred Hartman noted that he has 8 box seat tickets to Disney on Ice on Friday.  The seats come with 3 parking passes and Fred has agreed to throw in food.  Peggy asked Fred to auction this great item off and after looking back at Peggy with a strange look on his face, Fred pointed at me and told me to do it. (I’m sitting in the back from now on with Rebuck and his gang.)   Do I look like an auctioneer, Fred???  I managed to get $275 for the tickets because Ginny Roth took pity on my poor bid-getting and Mr. Williams, father of our student from McDevitt, chimed in with a bid that actually resulted in a small bidding war.  Mr. Williams, who bid highest on the tickets, turned right around and donated them to the Boys and Girls Clubs for the Disney show Friday after our speaker’s presentation.  What a true service above self act, Mr. Williams!  Thank you for your very kind gesture.  President John closed with a sincere thank you to the Pancake Committee on a great team effort.

Ron Guss said the District is seeking two interviewers from our Club to meet with potential outbound students.  Call Ron or Linda if you can do this.  Also, Javier, our inbound student,  needs a tutor in English and American history.  Call if you can habla Inglese bueno.

Yvonne Echols Hollins of the Boys & Girls Clubs was our keynote speaker today.  She’s also an active member of the Colonial Park Rotary Club.  She grew up in Harrisburg and she can remember being told that she should not consider attending college as that was “outside the box”.  However she followed her heart and became a teacher and then an administrator. Yvonne started to work for the Boys and Girls Club about two years ago, noting that the agency was in danger of closing when she took over.  She said she’s known as the “clean-up” lady, since she’s had to do a lot of that.

Yvonne started with a thank you to the United Way for their support of the agency.  Today’s youth who are raised in poverty grow up with a glass ceiling that discourages thinking of any future outside of their current environment.  She noted that there are so many children who have nothing, no material possessions, no guidance, and worst of all, no hope.  She stated that we both need to raise the bar on expectations and also be supportive.   She cited several examples of “kids” who attend and some of the issues that they face in life.

The Boys and Girls Club has a 6 hour program daily for 200 youth that emphasizes academics, expectations, mentoring, and hope.  Yvonne thanked Channels and the Harrisburg School District for also providing a full meal for the attendees.                        .

After thanking Yvonne, John wrapped up a busy day at Rotary.  See you all next week.
