PROGRAM:
Major Henry A. Heim's story is one of the Air Forces' finest.  During 4 tours of combat flying in two wars, he went above and beyond the accepted norms and exemplified the highest qualities of a combat Aircraft Pilot/Commander.

Wounded during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he then completed 16 antisubmarine patrol missions as a waist gunner on the B-18 bomber.  Subsequently testing for pilot, he was the first of his class to solo in 7 hours and 10 minutes, becoming one of 85 to graduate from a class of 204.  It was the first class of "Flight Officers"; his serial numbers was T-98.

Completing training on the new B-17 Flying Fortress, he was soon in combat over North Africa and Italy.  He served as Squadron Leader, Deputy Group Leader, and Group Lead pilot for the 2nd Bombardment Group, 20th Squadron.  Flying perilous missions over Italy, Austria, Hungary and Germany, he received a battlefield commission are only given to ground officers.

Volunteering for a second tour of duty, he would complete over 25 additional missions for a total of over 75 missions in the European Theater of Operations (ETO).  Serving as co-pilot for Major Richard Headrick, he participated in the "Surrender of Sardinia."  During a heroic mission to Bucharest, Romania (completed at night without fighter escort), he rescued 8 seriously wounded American servicemen.  He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) soon thereafter (October 1944).

During the Korean Conflict, he served as Aircraft Commander, flying B-29's for the 307th Bombardment Wing, 370th Squadron.  During his tour, he logged more flight time than any other Aircraft Commander; completing 51 missions.

In addition to the DFC, he received 2 purple hearts, 2 Presidential Unit Citations and the Air Medal with 11 clusters and many other awards.

What?  You want to know what I am doing and to tell me that I am supposed to be scribing the minutes of the Rotary Club Meeting November 2, 2009.

Well, of course I know that and in fact I was going over my to-do list from this past weekend and was coming to-yes that’s right I see it right here-report the minutes of Rotary!

(Before I go a step further may I just add that Rotarian Tom Peluso made a smashing Halloween statement with the orange tone shirt and tie and black suit today?  Also, please allow me a shout out to welcome back Tom Arnoldi from his trip to Italy!)

Okay, here goes, perhaps it was the blue sky day that brought out the great attendance today but my guess is that most came early and stayed late for the opportunity to see and hear the five candidates for Dauphin County Judge.

Even the early birds today were greeted at the door by one of the five candidates and the opportunity to shake a hand and receive a warm greeting from this awesome group.

You could feel the excitement in the air and it was certainly no surprise that brevity was the watchword for our club introductions today.  In fact after the bell rang sharply at 12:15 by President Carolyn we raced forward as Terry Masch offered invocation, John Hickey led “God Bless America” and Beth Peiffer invited Rotarians Klein, Martone, Parthemore and Detweiler to introduce visitors.

Karen “Moderator” Snider reminded all that indeed tomorrow is Election Day where 3 judges will be chosen from the five candidates at the dais.  She went on to explain that all candidates would be given 3 minutes to answer two questions and that they would present in alphabetical order.

We were treated to a brief biographical update and then heard from the candidate.  My notes tell me that each was impressive-each displaying a sense of confidence and leadership interspersed with a smattering of personal glimpses into their lives that would certainly give all the voters in the room complete confidence in them as future judges.

It was exactly 12:46 and the last candidate had offered comments to open the question and answer session.  In the following 30 minutes nine Rotarians offered questions and the candidates did not disappoint in taking turns with insightful answers and additional information.

This was truly a great meeting made all the better with the promise that our county judicial system will be in good hands for years to come as three of these candidates will don judicial robes.

President Carolyn rang the bell at 1:20 with a reminder of one of the next things on my to-do list-get out and vote on Tuesday!
