PROGRAM:
Kim Patten joins us from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), the largest regional non-profit education and advocacy organization working to Save the Bay. Kim joined CBF in 1999 as educator with their Susquehanna Watershed Education Program (SWEP), one of the CBF’s seventeen education programs that reach nearly 40,000 students each year watershed wide. CBF’s Education Program is the largest provider of environmental education in North America. SWEP, CBF’s only Pennsylvania-based program, is a mobile canoe-based program that has focused on engaging students in hand-on watershed education since 1990. SWEP introduces participants to their local rivers and streams, emphasizing the community connection to the health of these local and downstream ecosystems. Kim has personally worked with over 5, 000 students and led over 15 week-lomg graduate level professional development courses for teachers.
Kim is now CBF’s Pennsylvania Deputy Director and Outreach Coordinator, and as such cultivates a growing community of online sctivists, engages public and private partners in efforts to help shape public policy around water related issues, coordinates public education efforts, and supports individuals as they seek to become better advocates for the health of their local rivers and steams and the Cheasapeake Bay.
Erin Pittman is a 10-12 grade Biology and Bioethics teacher in Harrisburg School District at SciTech High School. She has been teaching in the district for six years spending her first year at William Penn High School. Erin earned her BS in Biology and Secondary Education with a minor in Chemistry from Lock Haven University and later completed her MS in Biology at Shippensburg University. Erin is married to Justin who is a juvenile probation officer for Dauphin County and the couple resides outside of Carlisle, PA.
