- Rotary International United Nations Day will be held Saturday, Nov. 3 for $35. A bus will leave from Queensgate (York) at 5:00AM for presentations and panel discussions addressing key humanitarian issues. An optional tour of the UN is available for $13. Contact Linda for forms.
- HAPPY HOUR AT AL BAKER’s
On August 23rd, Rotarians and friends had a fabulous time at the lovely home of Al and Joan Baker. Great food, drinks and music were generously provided by Al and Joan and we had lots of time to chit chat on the deck, by the pond and even the putting green.
Thanks to the generosity of all those who attended, we raised over $850 for our Youth Ecology Project in parternership with Harrisburg Sci Tech and Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
- Volunteers Needed for a one (1) week trip to Biloxi, Mississippi to help rebuild - Sunday through Saturday, September 30th - October 6th, 2007
This trip focuses on one thing: you and your help. You do not need
tools, special skills, or the ability to build a rocket ship. What is needed
are helping hands, and people willing to commit their time and energy to
help clean up an area ravaged by a hurricane. You need to arrange travel to
Baltimore (car) and then to Biloxi (flight from BWI). The church will pick up volunteers from the airport and provide food and lodging. Costs for the trip are minimal: your travel and airfare (about $180 r/t) and $20/day for lodging in the church. Your reward is knowing that you have invested in a community working to rebuild, and that you have helped a community grow stronger.
Interested? Here's what to do:
- Schedule time off from work!
- Contact Brad Statnyck, President of the Colonial Park Rotary Club at 805-5495 for more details regarding departure, return, and other details.

Schmidt's son. She also informed all of an opportunity to help in the
Hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast (Biloxi, Miss.) from September 30th to
October 6th. Contact President Brad of the Colonial Park Club at 805-5495
for all the details. Carrie also informed us that Al Baker's Happy Hour
on August 23rd was a huge success with almost $900 raised toward
funding the Youth Ecology Project.
Good News Reporting -- Pattie Hindermyer
Lots of Good news reporting today. The money was flowing from Rotarian's pockets as we bragged about children going back to high school and off to college to Al Baker's sponsorship of a Golf Tournament to assist Special Olympics (see Al to participate) to Bill Spahr's son who begins his teaching duties at West Point. Dave Freet even made a trip to his old school, Lycoming College, to give a summer commencement message to new graduates. Thanks to all who contributed today.
Program -- Graham Hetrick, Coroner, Dauphin County
Topic: "CSI-Harrisburg"
Jewel Cooper introduced our speaker, Graham Hetrick, Coroner for Dauphin County. Mr. Hetrick has been Dauphin County Coroner since 1990 and was President of Hetrick Funeral Home from 1975 to 2003. The role of the coroner is to investigate the "cause and manor of death" of homicides, car accidents, and even diseases. As coroner he sees the "end result of bad behavior" by people in our society. He brought along a body bag and used this object as a microcosm of the many problems that plague our communities in America. He suggested that unless we begin to use "critical thinking" to solve our societal problems of gun violence, death by drug overdose, murders, etc., that America won't continue to stand as a democracy. "Human Control" and not more Gun Control laws are needed.
He went on to suggest that we have no critical thinking by our elected politicians in laws that are passed to curb violence and that we need a "moral conscious" in America between what is right and wrong. He suggested that we need to "get our hands dirty" by working with young people through mentoring programs and giving one on one encouragement to these people that feel there is no hope. Churches and synagogues also have an important role and are a resource in reaching out to others.
As coroner, he is continuing to see more deaths by young urban professionals from drug overdoses and new diseases (AIDS and new strains of TB) from society's ills.
A short questions and answer session followed his remarks. If you missed today's meeting and program, you missed a very informative presentation by Mr. Hetrick.
President Carrie reminded all of the Harrisburg Gallery Walk on September 4th. Our next meeting is Monday, September 10th at the Harrisburg Hilton.
