PROGRAM:
Today's program is designed by the WORLD FELLOWSHIP COMMITTEE. We want to bring you in touch with what you support and on behalf of what the Rotary International Foundation is achieving.
It is also designed to bring you into closer touch with your fellow Rotarians who have been providing help and direct service to the Health Clinic in LA PASCUALA Dominica Republic.
Today's program will be "MC"'d by Bob Hostetter, new to the project, Rotarians Henry Funk (principal of Arthur Funk & Sons Builders,a regional company) of the Lebanon Club and Bob Hall of your club. These two fine Rotarians have been involved in this mission, on your behalf, since 1997. Rich Moultrie joined in 2004. Hopefully you will come to appreciate and celebrate their commitment and depth of Rotary service. I will also ask these fellow Rotarians to take a minute or two to share with you what investing this dimension of Rotary service has meant in their personal lives. Do we all not struggle to have our lives impact, in some tangible way, the lives of others who need us, near and far? That is Rotary's Service Above Self!
Respectively,
Bob Hostetter
HISTORICAL SNAPSHOT:
- PHASE I: Prior to 1995, health care was all but absent from this community of 2500 people along the northern coastal boarder in La PASCUALA on the Samana Pennisula located in the D. R.. Rotary International and Rotary Clubs throughout PA were made aware of this situation by Linda Alley Hrndon, who served in the Peach Corps there.
- PHASE II: Before the Rotary Clinic was built villages suffered from waterborne parasitic illnesses. In 1999 Rotary took action completing an aqueduct project which supplied purified spring water.
- PHASE III: A second floor was added to the Clinic as the result of ongoing Rotary projects. This addition allowed our clinic to reach level "A" status with the D. R. Dept. of Health
- PHASE IV: A two chair operational dental facility was added to the Clinic in 2004-5. This two year mission has become the most complete in the Samana region with modern X-ray, suction and hand tools which provide complete surgical/restorative capacity.
- PHASE V: In July 2005, Temple University partnered with the Harrisburg Club by sending six senior dental students and their professor, Dr. Jeff Shore to La PASCUALA. The first formal dental mission was completed in the fall of 2006. With this new partnership over 500 patients were treated by this amazing team of 6 students and their Professor.
- PHASE VI: In March of 07, again, a full scale mission of service was delivered by the students and fellow Rotarians HALL, FUNK, MOULTRIE and HOSTETTER. It has been reported that the level of goodwill and intercultural exchange are immeasurable!
Local villagers acted as interpreter/maintenance persons and now the Samana Rotary Club, 15 Rotarians strong, has joined the partnership.
You are asked to participate by your caring investment in the Rotary International Foundation and/or by "coming along" in late October, this year!

Fred Hartman brought his boss along, Michael Murchie, regional president for M&T Bank and Marie Lick had her son Andrew Lick as guest today.
Visiting Rotarians were Pete Shaull from Lancaster, Hector Ortiz from the Keystone Club, and from the Minta Krise from Mechanicsburg North Club.
John Logan, who is the Vice President and general counsel for the Vartan Group did his mini-classification speech. John confessed to being a "recovering Rotarian", and went on to explain that he has always been focuses on serving and giving back to the community (volunteer firefighter, 4H, …) and is happy to be back in Rotary.
Peggy Grove and Kent Frese made requests for silent Auction items for the Pancake Breakfast. This year there will be a children's auction as well as an adult auction. For the kids they are planning such items as a cookie basket, ice cream basket, perhaps gift certificates. Gift certificates will also be part of the adult auction, but they still need more items in the $20-$100 range. Al Baker has again donated a box of cigars. They are asking their fellow Rotarians to be creative with their donations.
President Carrie announced that our club had received the Membership Development and Extension Award for most new members in our district last year!
Introduction of Jessica Meyers by Past President Jewel Cooper. Jessica is the Owner and President of the JEM group, and also serves on a number of local boards and committees. She spoke today of her role as President of Harrisburg Young Professionals, and their focus on retaining young professionals in the Harrisburg area. She discussed the 4 area which HYP focuses on and that is Education, Entertainment, City Living and Working with the Business Community. Jessica and the HYP are very positive about what the Harrisburg area has to offer to young professionals to keep them working in this area. HYP is working with the local schools to get their involvement, the City of Harrisburg, various art organizations, and are even involved with beautification projects in the city. The future is bright for central Pa and keeping our young professionals in the area.
