PROGRAM: Musser Home Builders was established in 1972 by Chester Musser. We (Jeff and Beth) joined him as a partner in 1988. By 1993, we were the sole owner of the corporation. Throughout the past 39 years, we have established a strong reputation for providing a high level of service as we design and build quality custom homes, additions and perform renovations to existing buildings. While we primarily focus on residential work, over the past few years we have branched out into light commercial projects as well. Our clients appreciate our eye for detail, attention to quality and our focus on long term performance. The construction industry in Central PA has been good to us. We often look for the opportunity to give back to the community. We were honored to be asked to lead the community in the Extreme Makeover, Home Edition in June of 2011.

Notes: We are planning a public “viewing party” on September 25 when the show airs. The details are being determined at this point. I would like to use this forum to invite all attendees to this event. We are also continuing our fundraising efforts to meet the promise that we made to the Keefers to pay off their mortgage. I will not “solicit” the members, but I will mention the continuing efforts and how they can be involved if they choose.

We plan to put a visual presentation together to complement our “talk”. We plan to begin to work on that in mid-August.

Thank you for this opportunity and let me know if you need any more information.

LAST ROTARY MEETING:  9/12/11
Minutes by Dave Freet
President Bob opened our weekly meeting (convened today at the Radisson, Camp Hill) at 12:08 PM. Jeff Boswell provided the invocation referencing appropriately the ten (10) year anniversary of the terrorist’s attacks on the Twin Towers, NYC; the Pentagon; and the hijacked plane that was crashed by the passengers near Somerset, PA.

Opening music for the day was provided by guest soloist Cheryl Crider, accompanied on the piano by our own Norma Swain, in singing “God Bless America.” This was followed by a Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

At 12:28 PM President Bob re-opened our meeting. Guests were introduce and we moved on to part of today’s program, “A Musical Tribute” Commemorating 9/11. The first song was “The Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key and leading us in singing was Cheryl Crider, accompanied on the piano by Georgia Clements and Norma Swain.

The next musical tribute was “Ave Verum Corpus,” K. 618 by Wolfgang A. Mozart and Beautifully sung by our own Douglas Pieper, accompanied on the piano by Norma Swain. Our third piece was “Bring Him Home” (Les Miserables) by Claude Michael Schoenberg sung by Cheryl Crider accompanied by Norma Swain on the piano. This was followed by “Battle Hymn of the Republic” by Julia Ward Howe, played on the piano by Georgia Clements and Norma Swain piano duettists. The closing piece was “The Impossible Dream” (Man of La Mancha) by Joe Darion/Mitch Leigh sung by Cheryl Crider accompanied on the piano by Norma Swain.

All of the music was extremely well selected to honor those who died on that Horrible day ten (10) years ago at the hands of terrorists. It was moving and pertinent Music. Our sincere thanks to the musicians (vocalists and pianists) for sharing their talent with us to commemorate this tenth anniversary of 9/11/2001.

President Saline then introduced our Program Chairman, Bob Hostetter, to give an introduction of Dr. Joyce Davis, founder and president of “The World Affairs Council of Harrisburg,” a member of The World Affairs Council of America. Dr. Davis is an award-winning journalist and internationally acclaimed author who has lived and worked around the globe. She is a former foreign correspondent and foreign editor for National Public Radio and Knight Ridder Newspapers, at one time the second largest newspaper chain in the U.S. Ms. Davis specializes in foreign affairs and the media, and has written extensively on terrorism, national security and Islam. Dr. Davis offered her professional perspective of what helped bring about 9/11 as well as where the world stands today as a result of that
fateful day.

Dr. Davis’ perspective proffered what was happening in Israel immediately prior to 9/11 might happen here in the U.S. Islamic militants were calling for a jihad and many were angry and in a rage against the world, willing to die to highlight their cause. Of course, Osama Bin Laden fanned the flames of this anger and rage!

Ms. Davis fears Bin Laden’s successor  is still orchestrating uprisings we have witnessed in Egypt, Syria, Libya and other areas of the greater Middle East. The “good news,” Al Qaida desired the overthrow of dictators in the Middle East, but does not today have the popular support as a result of “brutal attacks” on civilians and Islamic citizens throughout the world. None of Al Qaida’s major goals have been achieved in the ten years since 9/11. “Arab Spring” is the name given to the Islamic educated, professional young folks who have fomented unrest and overthrow of dictators in Egypt, Syria, Libya.

These individuals are not affiliated nor have they been willing to buy into Al Qaida’s politics/leadership. We ALL must stand UNITED to oppose Al Qaida everywhere in support of our government.

A very informative program by Dr. Davis, in addition to the wonderful “Musical Tribute” to remember those who died in 9/11.
