From 1980 to 1987 he taught undergraduate and graduate courses as a tenured Full Professor in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina, while concurrently maintaining several administrative posts. Previously, Dr. Hanes served as a faculty member and administrator at the University of Florida.

  • The Rotary Club extends our condolences to Ron Katzman and his family on the loss of his wife Marjorie.

  • MEDIA RELATIONS SEMINAR: Tuesday, August 7th Wyndham Garden Hotel, 765 Eisenhower Boulevard, Harrisburg 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM. A light supper will be provided at no charde but you must register by August 1. This program can benefit your and your business. Please see Linda to sign up for this excellent program which includes: relationship building with themedia, determining what is news, understanding our ultimate audience, prepariing media interviews, setting the scope of an interview, conducting an interview, dressing for an interview, following up with editors and reporters and evaluating your performance.

  • KATRINA RELIEF: Our Club is exploring the possibility of participating in a Katrina Relief project in Biloxi, Mississippi, from Oct. 6-13. We hope to do this in conjunction with the Colonial Park club, and several other Clubs in our District. With enough participation, we can most likely rent a bus so all can travel together. Volunteers stay in the Bethel Church, with meals provided, at only $20 per day. The projects to be tackled will include painting and finishing tasks for a house. If interested, please contact Linda Freedenberg at the Rotary office. More details will be provided as they become available."
  • HACC will once again be hosting students and faculty from Minerva Business College (formerly Randers Business College), in Randers, Denmark, this September. Students will be accompanied by their faculty and will spend just over 2.5 weeks on campus studying, touring area businesses, and meeting with business, industry and government officials. Part of their course of study will include work with HACC faculty Marty Wise and his International Business students.

The College has volunteered to assist in identifying host families for the 24 students, and I ask you to consider this opportunity. Students range in age 16 through 21 and all are fluent in English. A website with biographical information on each student is available. Several members of our local chapter participated as host families last year and found the experience rewarding and the students very engaging. I was pleased to hear that many of the Rotarians who participated in last year's program expressed interest in hosting students for this year's exchange.

Students will arrive on Campus on September 5th and depart on September 23rd. While weekday transportation of the students to and from the College by the host family is preferred, it should not be a deterrent to hosting a student, as the Minerva faculty will have a van to assist with transportation needs.

The Minerva weblink containing individual webpages for each inbound student is http://galleri.hsminerva.dk/mv57/HACC_2007

Please consider this request and contact Linda Lefevre, Associate Dean of the BHET Division, with any questions you may have. She can be reached at 717-780-2366 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Minutes by Dave/Jacqueline Bedard:

President Garry opened up his last meeting at President at 12:10.

Bill Spahr greeted all who came and Caryn Carr lead the group with "My Country ‘tis of Thee."

Linda Freedenberg handed out 2007 - 2008 Rotary Club of Harrisburg Roster. If you did not receive one, please check with Linda.

Thank you to all Rotary Sponsors of the roster.

A new Hbg Rotary tradition began this week – Rotary Minute. This week, John Judson reviewed the International Rotary Foundation. Each member of Rotary is to donate $100 to the Foundation. Last year, we had only 50% participation and we are aiming for 100% this year. The focus of the Foundation continues to be the eradication of polio.

Ann Aufiero told us a little about herself in her Mini Classification Talk. She is president of Adability, a local advertising agency. Ann said that the advertising business is not like what you see on TV,, such as on Bewtiched . It is not dinner and cocktail parties. This is real work, involving creativity through collaboration with each client to identify core branding, marketing strategies and the types of media that each client needs to reach the specific target market. She loves her challenging career.
Garry, as out-going president thanked Linda for continuing her Rotary career. Thank you Linda for 10 outstanding years. He also thanked the dearly departed Bob Hanson for his inspiration as "MR. ROTARY!" and, finally all new members for their commitment and enthusiasm.

Janice Black (former District Governor) asked the club to applaud Garry for his leadership which led to the growth of the clubs’ membership during his tenure and many accomplishments during his one-year as president. We all had a good time.

Next was the installation of our new offices with Carrie N. Wissler Thomas taking the gavel. She explained that her last name is in honor of her parents: father - Wissler and mother - Nicholas. When she accepted her roll as president, the Board of Directors stood at the podium in support of her new roll.
Carrie outlined her goals for his year. She spoke of 100 years of Rotary, Service above Self, 4 Way Test, Presidential Leadership and the privilege and responsibility of the office she now holds. What a wonderful Honor. Carrie said she was raised in a 1960’s flower child’s family that understood service above self and showed her the commitment it take to truly live a life of serving others. Carrie is an Idealist and an artist and wants to help make the world a better place for the disadvantaged and to further world peace. Carrie, we look forward to your term as president and in helping you achieve the goals of Hbg Rotary.

CAUTION – PLAN YOUR DAY - There is a new initiative of Rotary – A “Scooter Penalty.” Any one caught leaving early from the meetings will be charged $1 for SCOOTING out early.

As new president, Carrie ended the meeting by ringing the Rotary Bell.
