- KATRINA RELIEF: Our Club is exploring the possibility of participating in a Katrina Relief project in Biloxi, Mississippi, from Oct. 6-13. We hope to do this in conjunction with the Colonial Park club, and several other Clubs in our District. With enough participation, we can most likely rent a bus so all can travel together. Volunteers stay in the Bethel Church, with meals provided, at only $20 per day. The projects to be tackled will include painting and finishing tasks for a house. If interested, please contact Linda Freedenberg at the Rotary office. Financial support is also needed to purchase supplies for the work crews and building materials for the homes we adopt. More details will be provided as they become available.
- YOUTH EXCHANGE INFO
The Rotary Club of Harrisburg will sponsor Ange Sauvage from Lyon , France. Ange will be attending Susquehanna Township High School. The Youth Exchange Committee will be interviewing host families (they do not need to be Rotarians) in Susquehanna Township. Ange will stay with 3 host families during the school year. He will stay with each family about 3 months. Host families are to treat him as you would your own child. Ange will receive an allowance from the Club. If you are interested in hosting Ange or you know of someone else in Susquehanna Township who would want to host him, please contact Linda Freedenberg or Ron Guss ASAP.

ATTENDANCE:
LAST ROTARY MEETING: 7/16/07 50%
Rotarians 72 Active Specials 11 Guests 7 Visiting Rotarians 0 = 90
Minutes by Steve Baloga:
Past-President Garry Brinton, filling in for President Carrie, brought the meeting to order at the Hilton as customary with singing, the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation. You still have the knack Garry! I guess after around 50 meetings, you get pretty good at it!
Guy Patterson introduced guests. There were no visiting Rotarians.
Mini-Classification Talk:
Bob Chamberlain, a boomerang Rotarian (was a member, resigned, came back) described his duties as President of IMR Limited. IMR is an information management company involved in providing micro-film services, which many organizations still use, and helping organizations capture, use, store, archive, retain and manage information through, you guessed it, computers.
Announcements and Committee Reports:
DJ, our former exchange student from Ecuador, stopped by to pay a visit to the Club and update our members on his activities. He is 20 years old and president of the Rotaract club where he is attending college in Ecuador. He still considers Harrisburg to be his “home” Rotary club.
Ron Guss announced that we are getting an Exchange Student from France next month who will be attending Susquehanna Township High School. We are looking for host families (taking 3 month stints). Please contact Linda or Ron to help.
David Morrison announced that we are sponsoring a Group Study program with business students from Denmark visiting for a 2 week period. We are looking for host families for the two week period starting September 16, 2007. Please contact David or Linda to help.
On August 7, 2007, Bob Saline will be coordinating a free Media Relations Seminar at the Wyndham Garden Hotel from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM - see Rotary Roundup for details. Contact Linda to register by August 1.
Program:
Harry Yaverbaum introduced our speaker, Dr. Michael Hanes, President and CEO of the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. Dr. Hanes is a new Harrisburg Rotary Club Member (and he figured his presentation would cover a mini-classification talk too – we’ll see!)
Dr. Hanes described the operations of the Whitaker Center including the Sunoco Performance Theater, Harsco Science Center and Select Medical IMAX. The Center gets around 400,000 visitors annually, and it has been in operation for the past 7 years. It has become a major attraction for not only Central PA, but all of Pennsylvania.
This summer the Center has an engaging international exhibit – “the science of ---Aliens”. It runs until November 18, 2007. It also has “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” appearing in the IMAX theater, in 3D no less! For more information see www.whitakercenter.org or the local newspapers.
Next Meeting at the Hilton.
